Planting Utopia at Albany International Airport (ALB)

New York’s Albany International Airport (ALB) and its neighbor, the Shaker Heritage Society are jointly supplying paintings through artist Julia Whitney Barnes.

Barnes spent a 12 months photographing and collecting specimens from over one hundred fifty flora growing in the Sharker Heritage Society’s herb garden, that is at the website of the primary Shaker agreement in the United States.

The herb garden, and historical Shaker ‘present’ or ‘spirit’ drawings, are the inspiration for the snap shots and prints Barnes created at some stage in her 12 months-long task occurring view at Albany International Airport on July sixteen. There’s also a partner web site-specific set up on the Shaker Heritage Society, which is a short stroll from the airport.

At the Shaker Heritage Society’s 1856 Drying House, Barnes’ installation consists of temporary murals on the outside of the historical brick building. The pictures are stark blue and white silhouettes of herbs in bloom hiking the outdoor of the pink brick partitions. Inside, there are prints on material and putting bunches of herbs from the garden. The work of art and the installation will remain on view through summer season 2023.

For the installation at Albany International Airport, Barnes made eight cyanotype art work on paper with flora collected from the Shaker herb lawn. (Cyanotype is an old photographic printing technique that creates darkish greenish-blue prints.)

These artwork are reproduced on aluminum panels with a view to be on view for 3 to five years inside the pedestrian corridor linking the new south parking storage with the ticketing area.

On July sixteen, ALB Airport can even debut a six-month-lengthy exhibition, referred to as Planting Utopia, within the put up-protection Concourse A Gallery with art work, preparatory sketches, and a documentary video approximately the collaboration.
