The Airport Search crew is in London this week on a trip prepared through our pals at Gatwick Airport (LGW).

The assignment?

Find out if it’s easy to land at Gatwick Airport on a flight from the U.S. See if it’s clean to take public transit to and from the airport to London, Brighton, and different close by locations. And discover a laugh activities.

As they are saying: difficult job, but a person has to do it. And Airport Search is up for the challenge.

Here’s how our journey goes to this point.

Seattle to New York

Our experience from our domestic base airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) turned into on JetBlue, to connect to one of JetBlue’s flights to Gatwick.

The airline begins service among Boston and Gatwick on August 4, and we’ll be at the inaugural flight out of Gatwick. So stay tuned for info from that adventure.

But first: the TWA Hotel

We selected an in a single day layover at JKF so that we may want to stay on the TWA Hotel, that's oh-so-without difficulty connected to JetBlue’s T5 terminal via elevator and a pink-carpeted flight tube that is an appropriate passageway to the Sixties.

The resort is built inside the restored and reimagined Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 TWA Flight Center at JFK and has restaurants, bars, stores, and a few a laugh 60s throwback activities inside the lobby.

There’s an infinity pool on the roof (costs follow) and, out inside the again at the ‘tarmac, there’s a Lockheed Constellation “Connie” L-1649A that has been transformed right into a cocktail lounge. This summer time, guests and site visitors can move roller skating rink or experience bumper motors on the lodge’s tarmac as well. (Fees apply).

You don’t need to be staying on the hotel to enjoy the foyer and tarmac sports. And many sports, including photo ops in cool areas, Twister, and lengthy-distance phone calls on retro pay phones, are loose.

Arriving at Gatwick Airport

The JetBlue flights to Gatwick Airport depart JFK at round 7:30 pm and land at Gatwick the following morning at round 7:30 am. That means you may plan a full day in the city.

Our flight landed early, so I was happy Gatwick Airport had arranged for me to relaxation and refresh at the onsite YOTELAIR London Gatwick Airport.

This changed into the primary YOTEL to open in the United Kingdom – manner again in 2007 – and gives short-remains (from 4 to 8 hours) in very compact ‘cabins’ that are perfect for naps, a refresh after a protracted flight, or an overnight if you have a very early flight or past due arrival.

Each cabin is amazing compact, with a mattress, toilet, small table, WiFi, USB ports, mood lighting, smart TV, and a little little bit of garage space. (You can also leave luggage at the the front desk, or ‘Mission Control.’)

I had everything I needed for a refresh or even determined a small fold-out stool placing at the again of my cabin door simply as I became leaving. Coffee, tea, and bottled water are complimentary on the front desk and guests can borrow alarm clocks for wake-up calls. Meals can be ordered and delivered as properly.

Here’s a snap of Gatwick Airport’s mascot, Gary Gatwick, sorting out the Yotel cabin. You’ll see greater (lot’s greater) of him during our London go to as he’s my travel accomplice for the week.

Gatwick to London in less than half-hour

It’s usually a pleasure to have an ‘aha’ moment whilst traveling and study a tool or service that you recognize will trade your journey conduct.

In the past, I’ve always arrived in London at Heathrow Airport and headed to city through the London Underground, called the Tube. The new Elizabeth Line looks as if its speeds up the tour time, but in the beyond, the experience from Heathrow to valuable London ought to take up to 45 mins and emerge as very crowded because it were given closer to the metropolis, mainly at some stage in rush hour times.

But travelling from Gatwick Airport to London at the Gatwick Express became a ways easier and manner more first-rate.

The experience from the Gatwick Airport educate station to Central London’s Victoria Station on the direct Gatwick Express become a 30-minute breeze.

I preferred that that is a train (no longer a subway) and that the teach station is simple to access, with a prime upgrade at the way. Trains run each 15 mins and tourists can use an Oyster smartcard to pay for rides. Prices range by way of time and sort but are discounted 10% while bought online or thru the app.

Trains from Gatwick additionally go to the Sussex coasts, for instance, Brighton and Eastbourne.

It could had been clean to transfer to underground Tube strains as soon as I arrived at Victoria Station, but my resort was an smooth 10-minute stroll and along the manner, I handed the Victoria Palace Theatre, where Hamilton is gambling.

As I referred to, Gatwick Airport mascot Gary Gatwick is my tour guide this week, and he obtained a totally enthusiastic welcome on the check-in desk on the St. James’ Court.

Our schedule this week will consist of quite a few traveling in London, Brighton, and West Sussex – all locations effortlessly handy from Gatwick Airport.

So please live tuned as we catch up on our adventures each day. Have some guidelines on locations we need to pass? Please add them to the feedback.
